A mentor of mine challenged me to create a letter of my choosing in a brand new font, designed by me.
So after pouring through his books on typography, and feeling very much inadequate to even touch this job, I sat down to sketch through some thoughts on lines and curves.
After decades of stuffy silence, the Frost Ampitheatre was back in business, about to host the Frost Revival Festival in May 2012. The Stanford Concert Network invited artists from around campus to collaborate and create art installations to welcome the concert goers as they made their way up the hill and down to the stage.
Max Cougar Oswald and I, along with other helpers along the way, ended up spending many good chunks of our afternoons throwing our heads together of how to make life-sized Truffula Trees.
“But these trees. these trees!
these truffula trees!
all my life I’ve been searching
for trees such as these.
The touch of their tufts
was much softer than silk
And they had the sweet smell
of fresh butterfly milk.”
A gown?! Ask my sister: much to her chagrin, fashion and I just don't seem to match up. Which was exactly why Jonathan Edelman presented me with this one. Two books on Alexander McQueen later, and many episodes of Project Runway into it, I was kinda finding a stride. So I created a pinterest boards (mood boards you see below) of an ephemeral persona and the Sutro Baths of Ocean beach to give me a sense of what I was looking for.
And then started sketching.
