Seeing someone navigate their phone, handle a product they use every day, allows me to place the features I’ve been working on into a context I have to remind myself I am not privy to: a user’s day to day.  Being there in person means I can have a conversation with the user about their thought process as they complete tasks. This became particularly true while working on EasyDroid, a phone launcher for the elderly, where users were drawing their own analogies, different from the ones I had anticipated.
